About Anthony Lee Gregory
First
off, I was born January 3, 1981 to Alfred and Kil Cha Gregory. I have a brother
named Duane, happily married with two daughters. I was born in Fairfax County,
Virginia, but spent the majority of my 25 years on earth in San Jose,
California. I graduated in May of 2003 with a B.A. in history from the
University of California Berkeley. I now live in Berkeley. I have a miniature
pinscher named Euclid. My interests include liberty, music,
literature, movies, other kinds of art and entertainment, history, and good
food.
I am a
research analyst at The Independent
Institute, a public policy research organization that analyzes government
policy and suggests nonpartisan, peaceful, free-market solutions to
today’s social and political ills. I am also a policy advisor to The Future of Freedom Foundation, a guest editor
for Strike the Root, and a columnist for LewRockwell.com.
Philosophically
speaking, I am a libertarian. While at UC Berkeley, I was very active in the
student group, the Cal
Libertarians, for which I was president for two years. My last semester I
coordinated a class
with a friend of mine about liberty and discourse, in which we were able to
present a history of the United States from an unusually libertarian
perspective. I also wrote my undergraduate thesis around that time, about
government/media relations surrounding the 1993 Waco, Texas massacre.
As
important as freedom is music. I play bass and sing in, and write songs for, a
band called the Melatones. We play all
kinds of music, all under the very vague category "rock." Two of the grooviest
people on the earth, Lewis Ames and James DeVera, are the other members of the
band, playing guitar and drums respectively. Both sing as well.
Aside
from playing bass, I also play piano and guitar. I’ve written hundreds of
songs and composed numerous instrumental pieces.
Rock musicians
I love include Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Ween, Phish, Simon and Garfunkel, Frank
Zappa, Elliott Smith, "Weird Al" Yankovic and a whole bunch of others
I can’t think of. I like Chopin, Mingus, Debussy, Thelonius Monk and
people like that.
Aside
from political commentary,
I used to write short
stories and poetry. I also wrote a novella, In A Hand Basket. It is political and science fictiony and
somewhat juvenile at times, but it has some good parts in it. It was fun
practice, and I hope one day to start work on my second piece of long fiction.
I like
movies and paintings and drawing and stuff like that too. I love The Big Lebowski, Empire Strikes Back,
Deathtrap, The Producers, The Matrix, Adaptation, Gangs of New York, Silence of
the Lambs, Sleeper, Terminator, Gone With The Wind, Cool Hand Luke, National Lampoon’s
Vacation, Pinocchio, Full Metal Jacket, Psycho Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,
MulHolland Drive, Monty Python and the Life of Brian, Finding Nemo, Nightmare
on Elm Street and other
movies like that. My favorite television shows are South Park, Seinfeld, Simpsons,
and syndicated Saturday Night Live (70s, 86-94 mostly). My favorite television show whose name
does not start with an S is the Twilight Zone. The Colbert Report and Daily
Show are good too.
I
enjoy almost every kind of food appreciated in Western Civilization. This last
year, I’ve been trying to eat healthier.
I am
an Eagle Scout. I use a Macintosh. I wear converse shoes no matter how I'm
dressed otherwise.
I love
the world. I love America. And music, language and freedom. My family, my
friends, my dog, liberty.
And that’s me.
Peace,
Anthony
